I used to process my own black and white films, and the effects possible in the darkroom have always interested me. The advent of image manipulation software such as The Gimp means that I can now play the same tricks starting from colour negatives.
These shots were all taken in the English Lake District, mostly in slate quarries near Chapel Stile. I scanned the original colour negatives and reduced the images to monochrome before applying a contrast-enhancing map. The result is rather dramatic when printed in large format.
